Fears and phobias

Following the discussion about fears and phobias, it's time for us to share our views on this interesting topic.

To begin with, I'd like to share a few quotes I found very interesting in relation to the topic.

'Thinking will not overcome fear,
but action will.'
W. Clement Stone

'We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.'
Plato

´The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.'

H.P Lovecraft

Have your say.
  • Do you find these quotes interesting, too? Which one(s)? Why?
  • Do you have any fears of phobias?
  • How do your fears or phobias interfere with your life?
  • What fear or phobia would be the most troublesome in the modern world?

  2. Thanks for your comments, Julieta!! Let me tell you that this is a very common feeling among students. Exams are not natual situations so it is reasonable that you feel that way. It happens to all of us. When you prepare for exams, try speaking in front of a mirror so you get used to seeing 'someone' as you speak. I hope this tip may help you.

  3. I love these quotes especially the very first one. I think all of us feel frightened of something, in fact, it's not something you have to shame of. Actually, I really admire those people who are able to face it. I suffer from Ophidiophobia (phobia of snakes) I can't see them even in photos or videos. I start to cry as a child, start trembling and i can't control myself. To me it's really dificult, especially when my friends want to go to open places such as port, countryside etc. I never feel calm, and all the time, I observe the trees, grass and places where I think there could be. Anyway, I try to face it.. Unless I'm trembling in frear I go to the countryside, or go to fishing. And once I've been in a serpentarium. It was the worst day of my life.
As regard with the most troublesome phobia, I believe tha Nomophobia (phobia of loosing cellphone) is a problem of twenty-first century. Nowadays nobody could live withount their movilephones.

I think I dont have any kind of phobia, although when I was a teenager I was very afraid to be seating nexts to the car driver because I had a shocking car accident with a group of people going to Iguazu for holidays. It was an terrible accident but now a days I feel more confident and I also can drive a car which I suppost to never do it.

  5. I find interesting the last quotes. I think that all the people at a time of life are afraid of the unknouwm.
I am afraid of go to the dentist, for that reason when I need to go I feel very bad, all my body to tremble, sweat a lot and the dentist have to use a lot of anaesthetic.
I think that the most troublesome in the modern world is claustrophobia, because the modern building are small and tall, and have elevator.

    1. I aree with you, Laura. In everyday life, fear of the unknown may prevent us from doing the simplest things such as trying new dishes. However, it extreme cases, it may lead people to do terrible things like disliking someone simply because they don't look like the kind of people they are used to.

  6. I like those quotes because each reflects something different but exactly with those "differences" I feel so identified.
Paradoxically, each quotes reflects what everyone try to keep inside. In other words, we don't accept that we live surrounded by unknown things and we don't understand that "we don't know everything in this life"
In my life, I never imagined that like most people in the world I'd have a irracional fear or phobia but unfortunately, this is true.
I'm terrified when I see pictures with gaps or holes very close that are repeated in a figure, such as honeycombs, fungi or some seeds.
Fortunately, this phobia doesn't directly interfere in my life but I hate seeing photos with those holes or gaps because I think there are worms inside. It's so disgusting!
In the modern word I think that probably the phobia most troublesome would be "Nomophobia", i.e, fear of not having cell or phone or "Editiovultafobia"described as the terror or apprehension and suspicion to Facebook.
Finally, I'm not afraid when I go to the dentist! However, the article is very interesting and amazing for me!

  7. I find these quotes interesting, especially the Lovecraft one, he is one of my favourites authors. I really like reading his horror fiction stories.
I don't like snakes , toads, frogs and rats but I don't considered this as a phobia because it don't interfere with my life, I just try to avoid them haha..
In my opinion, the most troublesome in the modern world would be the Nomophobia (the fear of being out of mobile phone contact) because most people are quite dependant of cellphones and the Anuptaphobia (the fear of staying single o alone for ever)
In my case, I'm not scared of going to the dentist. On the contrary, I really enjoy visiting regularly the dentist because I'm very caring with my teeth since I was a child.

    1. Anuptaphobia is really new to me as well. This could explain why so many people are afraid of committing themselves to a relationship.

  8. I found the Plato's quote very interesting, 'We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.' Because we can't live with fears, we have to try to overcome all the difficulties.
I'm scared of cockroaches and I always run away when I see one of them and spend a pot of insecticide. But I try to think that it's very small and can't hurt me. It's doesn't affect me much, I just try to clean or cover any hole where they can appear.
I think the most troublesome phobia in this world can be phobia to go outside your home or anywhere. I know that people who is afraid of people and the outsider world live a very hard life that make them feel depressed and insecure. In a way that the depends on their family for everything because they can't go shopping or anything. It's really difficult to overcome this problem, you don't have life.
About going to the dentist, I'm not scared or nervous, I believe in doctors and I think they know what they do so I'm not scare of dentist or anything like that.

  9. It's very interesting to read how you have interpreted the first quote. 'Light' might mean different things depending on the context and the way you deal with cockraoches is a clear example of how people try to overcome fears.

  10. I like the first quote, because explains what usually happen. Personally, I have one fear, and it's not exactly a phobia, because it's something that I can tolerate and isn't interfere with my life. I hate spiders, when I see them I go away asking for somebody to kill them. The other day I read an article in which said that we have this fear since ancient times, because in the past, spiders were consider a big threat, so humans had to be very cautious. Well in the modern world, I think that a troublesome could be, Allodoxaphobia which is the fear of opinions. Nowadays, we are so insecure that we live with the phobia of opinions, we care so much about other's opinions and sometimes we forget to do things that make us happy.

  11. Interesting points, Loana. I like the way you explain why some people dislike spiders. As regards our phobia of other people's opinions, I think it is one of the worst aspects of life today: INTOLERANCE. Although there are many more ways of expressing our opinions we don't seem to have learnt to respect other people's different ideas.

  12. I found interesting the first quote, looks familiar because I have this phobia, "the darkness". Although you don´t believe it, but It´s true, I can´t stay in places where there aren´t lights, I can´t sleep in a darkness room because all the time I´m imagining that someone is coming for me or that I will never go out. I have this phobia since that I was a chlid and I hope that some day It changed.
Most of the phobias are caused for things that happen in the past, and for the people results so dificult to overcome It.
Nowadays the most troublesome is the claustrophobia, a lot of people have this problem, for example to go into a lift (elevator), some people think that they can to get locked there.

  13. I find the third quote very interesting because I can say it reflects what usually happens to me, I mean, the fear of the unknown, what leads you to anxiety.
Apart from that, I have a real fear of dogfighting. This fear really bothers me because, wherever I am, if dogs start barking or growling to each other I run as far as I can, but then I realise I exaggerate a bit and I feel ashamed.
In my opinion, there are lot of phobias which would be very troublesome in the modern world, but one of them has called my attention, more than the others, and is the phobia known as ambulophobia. It is related to people who suffer the fear of walking.

  14. I really like those three quotes, but the one I feel most identified is the first. When I was younger, scary movies, frightened me so much! So one day, I decided they won't scare me anymore, that's why a started to watch the whole film without covering my eyes, and that way I could enjoy that kind of movies and feel the terror into my bones and make me feel alive haha It's nice for me. I know it is not actually a phobia because it's normal for every child to frighten these kind of things. But the truth is that, luckily for me, I don't have any phobia at all.
What completely impresses me is the list of all the phobias that nowadays exists!!
e.g. autophobia: fear of oneself. ?!?

  16. I find it interesting phrases truth are what they say sometimes people with fears and phobias. because they are things that happen .I am afraid to drive because I had an accident years ago and still can not shake the fear but with time and therapy will help moving forward, so just ride a bike by now, well I'm sorry fear when I have a practical I get very nervous to make me want to mourn ugly truth is I do not wish anyone soon get over it, it happens from this girl. I think the most problematic for the world's claustrophobia, as many people fear being locked into him as there are lifts edifios many modern sanatoriums etc.

  17. In my view, all of the statements are interesting. The phrase that caught my eye is “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.'”. This fear is a type of Xenophobia, which meaning I found in http://www.fearof.net/fear-of-the-unknown-phobia-xenophobia/ . Xenophobia might make someone to avoid making decisions that perhaps are good for them. In the end, I think we only regret the chances we did not take… We are all afraid of the unknown to some degree or another, but if we want to pursue our ideas, we need to overcome this fear.
I do not have a fear of or phobia about something. It is just that I have a dislike of scorpions, because I know they are really dangerous, especially for elder people and children. As I have a little girl, I try to keep them away by cleaning my house regularly and hiring a pest control expert.
I think there are a lot of phobias that have been caused by, or worsened by, the pressures of modern living. One of the most problematic phobias is Nomophobia. My husband suffers from this “no-mobile-phone-phobia”, and it is very annoying when we go out… He needs to find his mobile phone, otherwise, we would not go out. Another fear that is really common is the fear of flying. This aviophobia may be really difficult to overcome…
Answering your last but not the least question, I am not afraid of going to the dentist. But I do feel really anxious when it has been quite a lot time since I went to the dentist…

  18. The first phrase is really interesting to me because I think the best way to overcome a fear is doing something, acting. I don't know why, but it reminds me a phrase that said: A mind full of fears has no space for dreams.
One of my biggest fears, and I know it can be a bit funny but I swear it's true, is to get stuck in a bath of a bus. That's why when I'm travelling with my mum or my boyfriend I usually took my mobile phone with me, just in case...
And of course, it infers in my life, I can't travel comfortably because of that fear. But I try to overcome that situation filling myself with courage and going!
Nowadays, I think one of the biggest fear that people have is the fear of marriage. Maybe because It means a big commitment and we don't know if we really want to stay together with a person forever. What is worst, if you think of the idea that if it doesn't work you have to get divorced and how much it cost!
